Take Stock on July 2

Take stock

I noticed a contradiction: I propose a day of doing nothing, and yet here I am making a to-do list.
Let’s say that focusing on looking back and checking where things stand—stopping at gathering material for planning the second half—is the proper halfway gesture, and call it acceptable.
With that in mind, here are some things you could do.

Body and mind

  • Weigh yourself
  • Measure your height
  • Try a stress check (Japan’s Ministry of Health offers an easy mental health check, in Japanese: https://kokoro.mhlw.go.jp/)
  • Get a health checkup

Money and daily life

  • Update your bankbook
  • Sort out your wallet
  • Count your savings and check your credit card statements
  • Review your fixed costs (such as subscriptions)
  • Check your household budget

Digital

  • Back up your photos and data
  • Delete your social media posts and search history…
  • Check your screen time (Screen Time on iPhone, Digital Wellbeing on Android)
  • Change and review your passwords

Feelings and relationships

  • Remember the people you have met so far
  • Think of someone you want to thank (the summer greeting card can wait)
  • Take stock of your relationships (how close you feel to each person)

Surroundings and belongings

  • Look inside your desk and drawers
  • Look inside your closet (are your winter clothes hiding in there?)
  • Check how your plants and pets are growing

In closing

At the opposite end of the year, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are busy, and you are rarely in the mood for this.
July 2 is a time with no big events pressing on either side.
Why not use it as a moment to take a fresh look at things?
